How long does canned fruit last?
Canned fruit is a high-acid food and keeps its best quality for about 12–18 months unopened, and 5–7 days in the fridge once opened.
| Canned Fruit | |
|---|---|
| Unopened | 12–18 months |
| Opened | 5–7 days in the fridge |
| Ideal storage | Cool, dry shelf; acid slowly attacks the can lining in warm storage. |
Storage tips
- Rotate fruit faster than canned meat and vegetables.
- Fruit packed in juice or water stores as well as fruit in syrup.
Signs it has gone bad
- A bulging, swollen or leaking can, or a lid that does not stay down
- Liquid or foam that spurts out when the can is opened
- Deep dents on the seam or rim, or heavy rust that flakes off
- Off smells, mold, or cloudy liquid where it is normally clear
- Never taste food from a suspect can to check it: botulism toxin can be present without an obvious smell. When in doubt, throw it out.
