How long does freeze-dried food last?
Sealed freeze-dried meals from the major brands are rated for about 25–30 years in cool storage; once opened, they should be used within weeks.
| Freeze-Dried Food | |
|---|---|
| Unopened | 25–30 years for major brands’ sealed pouches and #10 cans (check the brand’s rating) |
| Opened | Reseal and use within weeks, as it starts absorbing moisture; treat rehydrated food like fresh leftovers |
| Ideal storage | Below 75°F (24°C), dry and out of sunlight. |
Storage tips
- Ratings differ by brand and product; some budget kits are rated 10 years or less.
- Count the water: most pouches need 1–3 cups of boiling water each.
- Home freeze-dried food is usually rated shorter than commercial products, depending on packaging.
Signs it has gone bad
- A swollen, punctured or torn pouch, or a broken seal
- An off or rancid smell when opened
- Unusual color, mold or slimy texture after rehydrating
- Moisture or clumping inside a freeze-dried pouch that should be bone dry
