How long do butane canisters last?
Butane does not go bad, so sealed canisters typically last many years; what fails first is the valve or seal, so check stored canisters for rust, dents and leaks.
| Butane Canisters | |
|---|---|
| Unopened | Many years while the seal and valve are intact |
| Opened | Remove from the stove after use; keep the cap on |
| Ideal storage | Cool, dry and away from heat; never above 120°F (49°C). |
Storage tips
- Butane performs poorly near freezing; isobutane/propane mixes or propane work better in cold.
Signs it has gone bad
- Batteries: white crusty residue, swelling or leakage at the terminals
- Bleach: a weak smell; it may no longer be strong enough to disinfect water
- Fuel: darker color, a sour or varnish-like smell, or separation into layers
- Canisters and cylinders: rust, dents, damaged valves or a gas smell
