How long does gasoline last?
Untreated gasoline starts to degrade in about 3–6 months; with a fuel stabilizer added when fresh, it typically lasts 1–2 years.
| Gasoline | |
|---|---|
| Unopened | 3–6 months untreated; 1–2 years with stabilizer |
| In a fuel tank | The same clock applies; run generators dry or stabilize the tank before storage |
| Ideal storage | Approved containers, in a detached, ventilated shed away from ignition sources, within local storage limits. |
Storage tips
- Add stabilizer when the fuel is fresh; it cannot restore stale fuel.
- Ethanol-free gasoline stores better than E10.
- Rotate stored fuel into your car every few months.
Signs it has gone bad
- Batteries: white crusty residue, swelling or leakage at the terminals
- Bleach: a weak smell; it may no longer be strong enough to disinfect water
- Fuel: darker color, a sour or varnish-like smell, or separation into layers
- Canisters and cylinders: rust, dents, damaged valves or a gas smell
