How long does infant formula last?
Infant formula must not be used after the use-by date printed on the container; opened powder should usually be used within 1 month.
| Infant Formula | |
|---|---|
| Unopened | Until the use-by date on the container (required by US law); do not use it after |
| Opened | Powder: usually within 1 month (follow the label). Prepared bottles: within 2 hours, or 24 hours refrigerated |
| Ideal storage | Cool, dry place, not in a hot car or garage. |
Storage tips
- Rotate formula early: buy new cans well before the oldest reach their dates.
- Ready-to-feed formula needs no water, which matters during a boil-water advisory.
- Always use safe water for mixing; during an emergency follow local boil-water guidance.
Signs it has gone bad
- A rancid smell, often described as crayons, putty or old paint (oils, nuts, nut butters, whole-milk powder)
- Mold on the surface or under the lid
- Off colors or a sour smell
- Hard clumps in sugar or salt are only moisture and are harmless; break them up
