How long does sugar last?
White granulated sugar does not spoil: kept dry and sealed against pests, it lasts indefinitely.
| Sugar | |
|---|---|
| Unopened | Indefinitely |
| Opened | Indefinitely if kept dry and sealed |
| Ideal storage | Airtight and dry; no oxygen absorbers needed (they make it rock-hard). |
Storage tips
- Hardened sugar can be broken up; it is still fine.
- Brown sugar dries out; store it airtight.
Signs it has gone bad
- A rancid smell, often described as crayons, putty or old paint (oils, nuts, nut butters, whole-milk powder)
- Mold on the surface or under the lid
- Off colors or a sour smell
- Hard clumps in sugar or salt are only moisture and are harmless; break them up
