How long do oats last?
Rolled oats last about 1–2 years in their original packaging and can keep for decades when sealed in #10 cans or Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers.
| Rolled Oats | |
|---|---|
| Unopened | About 1–2 years |
| Opened | 6–12 months in an airtight container |
| Ideal storage | Airtight, cool and dry; oats contain more oil than rice, so heat matters. |
| Long-term | Up to about 30 years in sealed #10 cans or Mylar with oxygen absorbers. |
Storage tips
- Steel-cut oats contain more exposed oil and go stale faster than rolled oats once opened.
- Flavored instant packets contain fats and dairy and keep for much less time than plain oats.
Signs it has gone bad
- Insects, larvae or fine webbing (pantry moths) in the package
- A musty, sour or moldy smell, or visible mold
- Clumps or damp patches from moisture getting in
- A sharp, paint-like or bitter smell, which means the natural oils have gone rancid (brown rice, oats, whole-wheat flour)
