How long does dry pasta last?
Dry pasta lasts about 2 years in the box, and plain semolina pasta can last 20–30 years when sealed in Mylar or #10 cans with oxygen absorbers.
| Dry Pasta | |
|---|---|
| Unopened | About 2 years |
| Opened | About 1 year in a sealed container; cooked pasta 3–5 days in the fridge |
| Ideal storage | Airtight, cool and dry, away from pantry moths. |
| Long-term | 20–30 years sealed with oxygen absorbers; egg noodles and whole-wheat pasta keep far less. |
Storage tips
- Boxes are not pest-proof: move pasta into jars, buckets or Mylar if you keep it more than a few months.
- Pasta needs plenty of water and fuel to cook; count both in your plan.
Signs it has gone bad
- Insects, larvae or fine webbing (pantry moths) in the package
- A musty, sour or moldy smell, or visible mold
- Clumps or damp patches from moisture getting in
- A sharp, paint-like or bitter smell, which means the natural oils have gone rancid (brown rice, oats, whole-wheat flour)
